albino ornata ? is there even such a thing

gary1 May 29, 2004 08:19 AM

hi. about 4 months ago i finally got my horned frog after clearing up some viv space and what seemed like and eternity of waiting, i even managed to over come that impulse buy and put off a couple that popped up until i found an albino.

in all my rearch before and since ive got it the albino's were all crawelli's . however my petshop had this labeled as c. ornata. its an exotics only shop and there usually great but i am beging to doubt its an ornata and that they may have labeled this wrong . ive tried matching pix and patterns on both cranwelli and ornata to see if i could id myself but i couldnt lol.

im almost 100% certain what i have is a cranwelli but can anyone clear this up for me, it doesnt effect its care at all but im very curious as like to know exactly what im keeping

The albino gene has not been located in ornata as far as I know. All the albinos out there are cranwelli.

Which one has the really sharp-looking horns above the eyes? I thought it was Ornata, w/ Cranweli being more rounded above the eyes. ??

Cranwelli have the more pronounced horns along with a larger head in proportion to the body. Ornata have smaller horns with a smaller head in proportion to the body.

I have had frogs that are definitely cranwelli with a ton of red and bright yellow. That doesn't mean much.

I have always seen that fantasy frogs are sterile. I have never kept them personally, so I do not know if that is the case or not. But if fantasy frogs are sterile, the closest you could get are hets for albino.

It would be possible but I would rather doubt it. I don't have the reference handy but apparently one of the methods of speciation within this group was through chromosomal doubling. I forget which species (is) are diploid but all of the other species are tetraploid or another multiple of the original diploid number of chromosomes (I think the Brazilian species is an octoploid).
What often keeps the different chromosomal numbers seperate is that the calls are different. In a captive situation this method of mate choice can be circumvented.

Reptiledepot is selling Albino Pacmans as Ceratophrys Ornata. I don't know if it is a misstake or something, but here is the picture: http://www.reptiledepot.com/pics/apac.jpg
