Carpet Chams

jason_greggs May 29, 2004 08:22 AM

Hello Everyone

My wife saw a Carpet Cham some time ago and wanted to get one. I don't like to purchase something unless I know more info about it other than it's cute...

So, I was wondering if anyone can direct me into the direction of locating information pertaining to the care of these "cute" little guys. I looked on Kammer's site and found some info and was wondering where else I can find more. It will be a little while before I purchase one. I like to be ready first.

Now, the one I saw was at a show and he didn't know alot about them and kept ignoring me when I asked for more info so I got mad and didn't buy anything. Anyhow, what are the going rates on these guys...he wanted $300... is that normal?

Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance
Jay

I purchased a male Carpet from K.K. and am having a terriable time finding females. I can find the normal species, but finding the sub-species {major} is proving to be very difficult. Thje male I got from kk is great, but I didnt think finding females would be this hard. I paid 125 for the male. If you are looking for the smaller ones look at foreveryoursreptiles. I think it is they have them.

I saw a female major for sale recently either on Kingsnake or Fauna (or both). Check it out...

To answer the original question, $300 is way too much for what is more than likely a wild caught animal. Captive born Carpets are very hard to come by, and even then the price is not normally that high. Wild caught animals can be very difficult to deal with (i.e. keep alive), especially the females.

Good for you doing your research beforehand...

Hi,

Carpets are probably one of my favorite species. I have had some for a while and will be hatching some eggs in a couple of months.

There isn’t much info out there. There used to be more carpets in the market some time ago, but they have become rarer.

They are a colorful small species (carpets lateralis lateralis) native to Madagascar. They reach sexual maturity very young (around 4 months), which makes their life span also relatively short (around 2-3 years). Their husbandry requirements are similar to panthers but might need a little more humidity.

Here is one link to some carpet chameleon info. http://www.chameleonjournals.com/icham/icham.php?The_Species=Furcifer lateralis

Most of the carpets out there are wild caught (mine are) and with wild caught chameleons it is always a gamble. For example mine have been doing great, some other people have less luck. Asking $300 for a carpet is too much.

It is good that you are doing research before buying. Good luck finding what you are looking for.

I'll let you know when the eggs hatch.
