Is there a problem with over-feeding my leo?

fadetolemons May 29, 2004 09:15 AM

One of my leopard geckos has been eating so much that she is now about 6-10 grams heavier than her tank-mates. She just eats so much and rarely gets full, whereas the others, while they do eat a good amount, seem to get full quicker. Should i be worried about the heavier one getting too fat? My girlfriend thinks i should put her on a diet because she's looking fat, but since she's growing still i thought it was best that I let her eat everything she could.

I've actually heard of leos dying from Lipdosis, sorry if i spelled that wrong, which is basically too much fat. Like humans and every other animal too much fat can be bad.

Its really your judgement call since we dont' know exactly HOW big she is.

I give my adult female 5 mealies every other day, she would definately eat more but there's not slow down in her behavior.

Only 5 mealies every 2 days? How fat is her tail? My adult female eats at least 15 mealies whenever I feed her. I feed her 3 days in a row then a day off. When she eats crickets, she eats between 7-10, and anywhere from 4-6 superworms a feeding. No criticism, you just may wanna look into whether you are feeding enough. I don't know your experience level, so no criticism here, just concern.

No worries i've had her for 4 years
her tail is as fat as your pics
Her thighs were getting ... um.. very plump :D

She looks great, i'm not worried about her getting too fat really, it's just that she's getting much fatter than the other geckos she's housed with. This is the thing i'm really worried about now. Right now she looks about how most geckos do, maybe a little more plump around the thighs heheh, maybe not. but she looks great. she's just getting ahead of the other 2. one is moving out in the next few days though, so maybe if she's only with the one other gecko it will even out some.

If shes still growing, I wouldnt worry about feeding her to much. My male is still growing and I feed him as much as he will eat, everyday/every other day. Just make sure shes getting thick off of healthy foods, and its fine. Leos IMO are chunky looking by nature, lol, though there are problems that can come from over-feeding of fatty foods, just like in humans. Just keep your temps up, and feed away because while growing they need every mealworm they can get. Good Luck
