We hatched this clutch of 8 eggs this past week and to our surprise all 8 eggs are spiders. There is a total of 5 boys and 3 girls. These guys are very light compared to the others we have hatched so far.

Babys in the eggs

Babys out of the egg. Look at that Stripe down his back. Hes not going anywhere.

Another Group Shot

In the egg. Love that Head Pattern

I was just discussing your luck with a friend the other day trying to figure out whether or not you have a super spider on your hands. Now I know your first clutch of spiders had a normal in it which would argue against the super spider theory. However... I also noticed that you like to use multiple males with your females. So, if you used multiple males in your first clutch, it's possible that the normal you produced was the result of sperm from a father other then your spider. So, my question is... Did you use multiple males on the female that gave you your first clutch? I can't wait until next week to see the results of your next clutch of possible spiders.

Thanks

Mark

Mark,
Yes there was a seperate male bred to the first clutch. It was an accident that it even happened. It was sold to me as a female and I never bothered sexing it. So you can imagine that I was surprised to see (him) locked up with the female in question. Needless to say I have 2 more clutches that will be hatching within the next 2 weeks and we should know the results real soon.
Stay tuned for the results.

The odds of going 8 for 8 if he is only heterozygous spider are 1 in 256. Possible, but a long shot.

Where both of his parents spiders?

The other clutches should clear up the picture.

spiderballs-net May 29, 2004 03:03 PM

Yes..Both Parents are spiders.

Just to be clear.

The 8 for 8 spider clutch was from spider X non spider, right? The 1:256 odds where for that cross. If the recent 8 egg clutch was spider X spider then the odds are only about 1:10 of going 8 for 8 spiders if spider is dominant and about 1:25 if it’s co dominant homozygous lethal.

It was the spider father of the recent 8 egg clutch that was from a spider X spider breeding so could theoretically be homozygous spider, right?

Your answer made me realize that I was only assuming that the 8 egg clutch was spider X normal although I assume you are referring to the clutch the father came from as spider X spider.

I dilute my Roccal disinfectant at 1:256...LOL

The "striper" is sweet.....I remember a couple of yrs ago, Ren hatched out a "striper" and thought how sweet that made the Spider look......I would definitely be keeping it as well

Congrats again on an awesome clutch!!!!

spiderballs-net May 30, 2004 07:48 AM

My breeder male spider is from a spider X spider breeding. I purchased him from Renaissamce Reptiles. They to have had some nice striped animals which leads me to think that there is some genetics involed. The female that produced this group was a very reduced female with no striping. So it has to be coming from somewhere. Thank you for all the kind words people and we will keep you updated on how things turn out with the next 2 clutches.

RandyRemington May 30, 2004 07:07 PM

The "very reduced female with no striping" that laid this year's 8 for 8 spider clutch is not a spider, right? I think that is what everyone is assuming but just triple checking since I don’t see anywhere where that is said for sure.

joels417 May 31, 2004 09:56 PM

Rob's "perfect" clutch came from spider x normal breeding.
