Undercover redbellies.

Well, apparently my snake building is the mecca around here for N. erythrogaster, because I found an adult male hanging out in there this morning, and after comparison to the bigger one I found last week, I'm certain that they are a pair. What next?

Quite strange! I guess maybe the male came because he smelled the pheromones left by the female. Anyway, having snakes COMING to your house is not a problem in my book. Keeps you from having to go out and look for them. Happy herping and keep us updated on what comes next.

Well...not 100% on what it was, as I was on vacation last week...but one of my dogs got nailed but (my guess) a copperhead in my backyard now too! Doesn't surprise me too much though...we've had a strangely high amount of swamp rats in the woods behind my place. Found a ratsnake making short work of one the other day. Its been fairly dry here, and toads have been holding up under the house and snake shed, which is also why I've had the redbellies around I believe...Just hope I can find this new critter, as I'm going to be liery letting my 3 year old daughter play in the back yard untill the snake is found, or proven not to be in the area anymore....hmmmm...

Sorry to hear. If I were you, I would start trapping and "doing away" with the rats. No food source=no snakes. That still seems strange though, as many copperheads and cottonmouths feed mostly on frogs, or at least from my experience that has held true. Maybe they are after the toads as well...

And the sign says "No long hair freaky people need not apply." So I put my hair under my hat and I went in to ask him why. He said you look like a fine outstanding young man I think you'll do. So I took off my hat I said "Imagine that Huh Me working for you."

Well, that could be too with all the toads. However, there is a possiblity of it being a canebrake too, as I removed a 4 footer from behind my house last year...but the insertion marks from the fangs don't even seem to be far enough appart to have been a yearling.....UNLESS, it was a pygmy..but would a pygmy be hunting swamp rats?

Doubtful...he might be after amphibs or skinks though. Who knows...Kind of hard to tell with all the different species around.

Well, I suppose with all the forage that I have around my place that anything is possible. I've been finding yearling black racers with are natoriously lizard eaters hanging around this year. I've generally got a good population of five lineds and green anoles, not to mention a plethera of toads, slimy salamanders, leopard frogs, and now swamp rats....guess I should just set up movement detectors for the critters...lol

having so many herps around is sometimes a curse. Most people wish for it, but I doubt many jump at the chance knowing the some venomous species are hanging around. If I ever head out your direction, I might drop you an e-mail so I can herp your backyard lol. Take it easy and let me know if you turn up that bugger that got your dog.

Will do, if you get out this way I'd be glad to have an extra set of eyes to find some of these buggers. So far nothing...but I'll let you know what happens.
