baby beardie wont eat anything but crickets -help!-

spottedragon May 29, 2004 02:42 PM

my bearded dragon is about a month old and can eat more pinheads than she has fingers and toes, but she wont eat any of the fresh salad i put in there. i have seen her eat some of the squash once but i think that was just because she was curious. i didnt think she ate anything while i was gone at school, so i took a picture when i first put it in there and compared it to what it looked like when i got home. nothing had moved in the bowl. i gave her endive, mustard greens, yellow squash, and pellets. I make it brightly colored to attract him but he seems to have no interest. i have tried to feed him only a few pinheads and he still has no interest in it. right now i just put the pellets in because they are easier to see if they are moved but still nothing. what else can i do to make him eat the salad?

Don't stress over it

What is important for babies is exactly what it's getting, the protein. Often, little ones don't eat greens. I had one that didn't touch them until he was 7 mo.

Be sure to gutload your crickets with greens so your beardie is getting them in a round about way.

You can try putting the greens in a shallow dish or ashtray, and put the crix on top. Your beardie may get some greens while going after the crix. If not, it's ok, really.

If you are using calcium and vitamins on the crix, your beardie will be just fine.

I answered this in another thread just yesterday, so I'll copy and paste my post...

"The way I got my baby to eat salads was I'd put a piece on the tip of my finger and move it around in front of him. He'd get curious and taste it, and realize it was good food. Then I wouldn't offer crickets until 12 or 1pm, but he'd have the salad available all morning. It only took a few days for him to realize if he wanted to eat something in the morning he had to eat the salads. Now he loves em! You just gotta teach them that the stuff is edible."

Of course, my baby didn't start eating greens regularly until he was about 2 months old. Like ChristyJ said, a 1 month old is perfectly fine eating mainly crickets, the protien is what's most important for now. Keep offering greens daily, and try offering them first thing in the day and no insects until a bit later, and eventually your beardie should take to them. Sometimes it takes a while but you gotta keep offering them.
