Questions: Litter dam, sliding glass, vent screens

drdoolittle May 29, 2004 03:44 PM

I've just completed the 6' wide x 3' deep x 2' tall basic box for my Dumerils Boa cage and now have some questions before going too much further:

1) I'm going to run a litter dam along the front but wondered if I should put the lower guide for the sliding glass doors on top of this dam or snug against the front of it but at the level of the floor of the cage. Seems like the second choice would still leave a little space for substrate to collect in.

2) What type of screening is good for the vents. A Dumeril typically wouldn't climb up to the ceiling where he could rub against it but I'd rather be safe. Does anyone sell a plastic/rubber coated screen?

3) Vents better on top of the cage or on top of the sides?

Thanks everyone!!

Put the door track on top of the litter dam. With a dumeril's you'll probably still get some litter in the track but it will not be as bad.

I have seen rubber or vinyl coated screen at Home Improvement stores. It appears to be sporadic/seasonal, however.

Where the ventilation is placed really depends on a number of factors. But if you want to hide it place in on the upper sides or back. This seems to be the popular choice. I suppose the absolute ideal is vents near the bottom and the top to allow for good cross ventialation and to allow heavy gases to escape.
But probably not absolutely necessary.

Home Depot sells a vinyl coated hardware cloth, and you might also want to try using soffit vents. You can usually get these in vinyl, or galvanized metal. Those might work better than screen. Home Depot or Lowes...etc sells them. Or if you know someone that does roofing and siding might have them.
