This is getting a problem.. **PICS**

Marcel Poots May 29, 2004 03:58 PM

I grab her from the cage

Immediatly she start sniffing and trying to bite

Even on the inside of my palm

Finally she knows where to start

Then she starts downing her 220 lbs prey

I just don't know what to stop her from doing this. She does this every time I handle her... Any suggestions?

Well, haven't you said that you generally don't get your snakes out except when you feed them?

Could it be that this snake is associating you with food, regardless of how your hands smell?

I'd say just handle her more often and soon she should realize that she's not a retic.

By the way, that's a nice bloodred.

The old ice cold spray bottle does wonders..

How much does the snake get handled? Maybe it needs to get more used to being held. Also, maybe it is just hungry all the time (although it looks to be well fed and healthy). Beautiful snake, by the way. Is it a blood red?

The last pic strikes me as particularly funny for some reason, which is good considering I've pretty much had a sucky day. Thanks for posting.

Isn't that painful? How much do you let her swallow before doing something about it? What do you do about it? How do you get her to release? Why do the beautiful ones do this? I have a friend who would answer, "because they are snakes!".

No it doesn't hurt. I don't let it happen but it just happens. She grabs me and simply doesn't let go. I tried spraying with alchohol but she will not even then release. So I gently pull her off.

I've got a Cal king that does the same thing. After she gags and spits my finger out, she's great. Gets old though! I would say, feed her more, but who knows.

Marcel,
I can't stand by and not say anything when you post my favorite of all your corns.lol. I say just give in to the fact that some snakes, regardless of handling frequency, will always be biters. I have a pituophis that no matter what has always striked and hissed defensively. I tried like crazy to tame him for awhile but eventually gave up and considered that its just part of his personality. Now I actually like having him (named Diablo) since he keeps me on my toes and always reminds me of how these are wild animals afterall and as such should never be underestimated, even though they can't do too much damage as with larger boa/python species. Well, good luck but knowing that bloodreds are finicky eaters, I'd be afraid to increase handling as it might stress the snake out and do more harm than intended. However, your bloodred is on steroids or something anyway so it doesn't matter.LOL.
Sincerely,
Jason

Jason,

She is growing nicely huh? Well, she hasn't been fed anything larger than a small fuzzy and she gets only one meal every 7 days.. I don't know why she goes so fast... But comparing to all my other 2003 corns she is tiny Regarding to the rest of your post, I don't mind an aggressive snake eighter. In fact my Russian ratsnake female is aggresive and can't be handled. And I keep these species for their wonderfull behaviour..LOL But this little Bloodred is far from aggressive. She just thinks I am food. That is something I have not experienced in over 15 year of corns.
