egg laying question

sliderzucci May 29, 2004 04:32 PM

Hey everyone. I've had my two female yellow bellied sliders for about a year. They grew from quarter size to about 4/5 inches long. I am just wondering when they will need to start laying their eggs. From what I understand from this forum, I still have a few more years before I should have to worry about this. I can't find any information about it on any of the care sheets.

Thanks!

First of all they're both female, and second of all this won't happen for a few years! The females might just lay eggs in the water but they won't be fertilized, but I'm not exactly sure on this. The point is they need a male around to have hatchlings.

Yeah, I understand that, but I thought nomatter what, they need to lay eggs or they'll get sick. But I figured this wouldn't be for another few years anyways. Thanks for your reply!

as far as i have seen and heard.... female turtles may or may not lay eggs... some do and some dont, i guess it all just depents on the turtles. but if your turtle does become full of eggs, she will possibly lay then in the water. but if she doesnt, she could become egg-bound and die. the better thing to do is to put her in some dirt for a few hours (this could take several days) and she will lay her eggs in the dirt. they obviously will not be fertile, but this will keep your females from becoming egg-bound. however, there is also a chance that neither of your turtles will lay eggs. i have also seen/heard people say that turtles will not start to lay eggs until they are like 5 or 6 years old. i hope this helps!
