Houston snakes

Underachiever May 30, 2004 12:11 AM

I live in the Houston area(Harris County)and work as a Locomotive engineer. I see severl water snakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths, but i never really see any other snakes. I have gone on my own little expeditions to see what i can find but other than the above mentions i have only found a Speckled Kingsnake, Mudsnakes and a few coachwhips. Does anybody know of all the snakes in my area and where i may find them. I especially would like to find Rough Greens and Milksnakes.

Sounds like you've caught a majority of your local snakes. I would suggest you get a field guide to help you for specifics in and around your area. Good luck.

I grew up in Houston, around fm1960 and 45.
I remember lots and lots of ribbons, garters, water snakes, blue racers, hognose, and a few texas rats. I never saw a milk snake but they may be out there. Good luck!

I am from West Houston around the beltway. If you want milks, head up north towards the woodlands. They are out and about around there. I do not know any specific spots, but I am heading out there tomorrow to do some looking. As for rough greens, check around any creek or ditch. You can't take them, but I have found a few on the bear creek equestrian trail. It takes a lot of hard looking as they blend in so well with the creek side vines, but when I AM looking, I almost always find one. Good luck. If you want some more help, feel free to email at snakeguy88@aol.com.
