Parasites

A.C.3 Jun 18, 2003 09:23 AM

I took Ukon to the vet yesterday and we found out that he has two different kinds of parasites. I got medication to control the two but I am wondering were they came from. He is 7 months old and I got him from a trusted captive breeder (my friend). I was thinking maybe it came from the log I have in there. I just found in the woods. However I did put it in some bleach water before putting it in but maybe I didn't soak it long enough?

Some parasites can also be transferred through crickets and greens. I make sure I wash my greens under the sink before I put them in the tank. As for the crickets, sometimes there is just no way to avoid it, but you can try some parazap to take care of that which works very well. You can pick some up at http://www.parazap.com. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Most healthy bearded dragons have low levels of coccidea (and sometimes pinworms) in their system but if they are given good lighting, food, and a stress free environment the parasites are not able to run rampant. Many people believe low levels of parasites are beneficial as they bolster the digestive process. Make sure your dragon is warm enough (110 degree basking area), is fed enough and is not showing signs of stress.
