whats the best temperature& substrate for incubating hondo eggs?

saunch May 30, 2004 01:11 PM

I dont have any experience with eggs so I was wondering about temperature, moisture in the substrate and which substrate, and finally one of my females has stopped eating and one hasn't both are getting fatter by the day is it normal for them to eat all the way through or until the body cavity cant hold food anymore?
Thanks Sandro

No females are the same when gravid, some will eat right up to egg deposition and some will refuse food. I'd recommend smaller then usual prey item for gravid females.

As for substrate, none are better then others, everyone has their own preference of either, spagnum moss, vermiculite, perlite and some even incubate on moist towels. For first time users, I'd say get some spagnum moss and wet it until you can squeeze all the excess water out of the moss. The moisture left over should be sufficient for a full term incubation. Make sure your moss is thick and NOT wet, just moist to the touch.

As for temperature, again a matter of preference, I aim for 82.5, anywhere between 80 to 84 on average is good, short term fluctuation over and above this will not arm the eggs BUT try to aim for 82-83 and you will be fine.

Good luck.
