Yellow Spotted Timor Monitor

Raptorman May 30, 2004 06:19 PM

Hey all, been looking at many different specie of monitors and all there traits. I've come across the yellow Spotted Timor Monitor and I seem to be liking it. Can anyone give me any information about the moniotor, or comepare it to others? Does anyone know where to find a caresheet? Does anyone have any first hand experience wiht them?

Around, they are flighty, they bite hard, and take years on average to get used to ya. The big majority are imported and have some big parasite loads, yet keep them the way they should be kept and the parasites mean nothing to them. As a matter of fact the timor in an intermediate host so most parasites are just waiting for the next predator to eat them and pass on to their next life stage. They like alot of hide spots, they like crickets, and mice, quail chicks etc and are beautiful animals. Just not the best captive for someone who wants to see or interact with their monitor.

I second all that, except to add that if you can get a captive hatched or freshly imported baby, you'll see more of it than you will of an imported adult. At least this has been my experience. But as far as handling goes, it seems the best you can hope for is for them not to poop on you.

Timor monitors are rather timid monitors that will be happiest
if they are not handled too often. A freshly wild caught Timor
is not likely to do well with an inexperienced monitor keeper.
Once acclimated they can be good captives and will enjoy
a variety of insects, pinkies, and for largish adults, quail
chicks.

Like most monitors Timors like to climb & dig. They should be
misted and kept at a high humidity.

Some freshly wild caught Timors in a new home will not eat.
One trick to get them eating is to offer them a small lizard. They
can't resist that. Although this should normally not be done, it is
sometimes the only way to get them eating. A small lizard like an
anole should be frozen, thawed and brained (skull cut open) to
increase the scent. Give the animal plenty of privacy after offering
the anole. After the Timor will take the anole, begin scenting pinkie
mice with the lizards brain. Soon the monitor will take unscented
pinkies.
Wild caught Timors should alway be checked for internal parasites
and treated with the appropriate drug.
