Ball Python or Rainbow Boa?

cataphract May 30, 2004 07:10 PM

I am planning on buying my first snake, and these two in particular have caught my eye. Does anyone have an opinion on cost of care, special care, temper, etc? Please, this is not "Rainbow vs Ball" topic, i am just looking for some insight (ie: good and bad things about each).

Thank You!

I just recently got my first snake.. it's a BP. I've heard great things about both snakes but rainbow boas are more expensive to buy, i'm not sure if they are much more expensive to keep. So far i really love my snake!

My opinion.....
I far prefer my Rainbow boa (Brazilian) over most of my snakes. (In fact I am hoping to get more soon) While they may require a bit more specific care (high humidity, lower temps) they are far more reliable eaters, to me more beautiful and while they get longer they are thinner. They are active, less secretive than BPs. To me are less mellow but have good personalities. The general price is higher than a general BP. But for any 'morphs' of BP you are gonna go way higher. Everyone has a BP (comparatively) while BRBs or CRBs are less common. BPs, have that nagging, frustrating tendency to go off food for months. Okay if you can accept that. Not if you are new and not sure your snake is doing something 'normal' and healthy. Either way, do your homework first, so everything is set when you do decide.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

I have both and love both..the only difference is a normal BP although beautiful does not campare with a BRB as for color and irredesence. However the major point is that BRB needs more specific care. They have less tolerence for temp and humidity fluctuations. So I would say beauty goes to BRB and ease of care for BP. I love them both just depends on you.
