chipstahoy May 31, 2004 09:07 AM

since i had no help with my other post about incubators, i decided to direct it toward someone. so...what kind of incubator do you use? you pry incubate many eggs at a time, but what would you recommend to me if i was only gonna have 2-8 eggs in at a time? where should i buy it? i don't have a ton of money, so the cheaper the better, but i want something that will work. thanks

I think most everyone on this forum, and even the "big" breeders use a thermal air hovabator. That's what I have here, and except for the occasional thermo wafer going bad they work just fine. Get you some deli cups and vermiculite, and a decent digital thermometer from Wal-Mart with an outdoor sensor. That's all it takes. Whether you incubate 1 egg, or 30...

how about a poly box(free from a pet store that sells fish) with a heat mat at the bottom plus a thermostat(habistat) though the top works very well and its cheap!
i use them and for 4 incubaters it only cost $40.(100% hatch rate)
hope this helps.

If you're only incubating a couple eggs and you don't want to buy an incubator, I would suggest incubating them on top of your fridge or freezer. I used to have a stand alone freezer that put out a nice amount of heat on the top. I succesfully incubated turtle eggs, snake eggs, and chameleon eggs on top of it. Not everybody's freezer is the same, so before you try it you should check how much heat is given off. I just incubated them in tupperware containers with some vermiculite and water.

hey, that's a pretty slick idea. i might do that, but i don't think my fridge/freezer gives off my heat. thanks

I got my thermal air hovabator at LLLReptile for $38.95 plus shipping. They also throw in some deli cups, a bag of vermiculite, and an analog thermometer. You should be able to pick up a digital one at wal-mart or target or something for under $10.
