beardy been sick???

braveheart May 31, 2004 11:28 AM

my beardy has threw up..he was shaking his head then a large black lump came out(size and shaope of a thumb)..is this ok??it had undigested greens in it....the greens i feed him are called spring greens...and are a dark colour of green and are large leafs..they are pretty thick and rubery...could these type of greens be too hard for him to digest???? he ate straight after being sick and seems fine..he is a very big eater so im also wondering if he maybe ate too much..although the reens he threw up were the greens he ate the day before...so should they still have been undigested after 16 hours???? any info would be helpfull..im not online no more but ill go to library tommorow to check see if anyone can help...also im not sure what these type of greens are called in usa..but as i said there thick and kinda rubbery..as im in scotland i cant fnd the vegtables you guys talk about..thanks guys for any info

vet trip may be in order but before you do that - are the basking temps ok? make sure its 105F (40C for us non-yanks - with a name like that you have to be a fellow scot!) otherwise its hard to digest anything. Also make sure the veg is not too big - leafy stuff can be chewed easily but the firmer vegs should be grated. check on www.beautifuldragons.com on the food list to see if the greens you fed were listed.
in the meantime i'd keep him hydrated, maybe a good soak and watch the feeding over the next few days. i'm not sure how old he is but i think they're juvis if i recall correctly from earlier posts. in that case dont feed too many mealworms because the chitin in the exoskeleton can be too hard to digest for the younger bd's.

hope this helps, and he gets better soon.

dont worry about. there are 3 things i can think of that may have caused this that arnt viral dieses.
1. you recently perchased your bearded dragon and he has been spending his time on the perimiter of the cage and not getting the necccesary heat to digest something. if he is basking make sure the basking spot temp is about 105 degrees fareinheit.
2. your bearded dragon cannot digest the greens you are feeding him. switch to romaine lettuce. NEVER feed iceburg lettuce!
3.you have recently made a sudden increase in the amount of food you are feeding him.Go back to feeding him the amount you were feeding him before. and slowly gradualy get him used to eating a little more.add an additional cricket every few days or a little extra peice of lettuce evry few days. dont feed him too much though. you dont want an obese beardie .
if he throws up again then i would take him too the vet.
2 of my bearded dragons threw because of reasons 1 and 3. and thery are healthy as can be. so dont freak out just yet

romaine lettuce has very nutritional value to beardies - best to stick with kale, mustard greens, collard greens and other leafy stuff. and unless the beardie is a full grown adult, let it eat what it wants because its still growing and needs the nutrition
