JUST PURCHASED A COLLARED LIZARD!!!

shopunke May 31, 2004 01:32 PM

Any and all information would be WONDERFUL! Are they nocturnal? I have a heat lamp for him. I'm pretty sure he's a male. I've fed him already, I know the enclosure is suitable.... But please, ANY AND ALL information would help me out SO MUCH! Should I mist him? Does he drink water? I know they eat fruits....

hey there and welcome to the forum! collared lizards are awesome. the lizards are definitely not nocturnal, they love to bask in sunlight or under bulbs. i mostly feed mine insects dusted with calcium and sometimes a multivitamin. i know other things can be fed to them but i have never had any luck feeding them something that did not move (and i just don't have time to pull fruits and veggies on a string, ha ha).

as for good care sheets, i don't think that the care sheet link on top of the webpage has any collared lizard links, however melissa kaplan has a good page and i think links (anapsid.org, i think) and mr. wells has a good page, i think called mountain boomer and there is a page called fancy collared lizard that has a good care sheet. if you type those key words on a search engine you should be able to find the pages. i hope this helps and if you have anymore questions please ask anytime.

and congratulations on your new collared pal ! They are a fun little lizard to watch, and get very tame with daily handling!

You have a heat lamp, temps should be 100 - 105 basking and high 80's - 90 the rest of tank. They like it Hot!
Also need a uvb flouresent light.

Yes they need daily water, either in a shallow saucer or dripped from above, On the screed an ice cube can melt down on to a rock, for them to lick naturally.

Or a paper cup with a pin hole in the bottom achieves the same thing.

Most do NOT like veggies of fruit, but I do provide some tiny pieces of greens shredded apple and things. Some pick at it soem do not.

*** BIG bug eaters. Crickets mainly, superworms , waxworms, moths

dust with calcium powder, I use miner-all.

Here is a a couple of sites, one owned by our forum buddy Will Wells, plenty of info and pics

Hey thanks :D I think I've seen those sites already, to tell you the truth. Turned out, when I was searching for care sheets... I was spelling Collared wrong. *cough* So I have found out a bit more information!

I'll run out and get a UVB ASAP. Which may not be soon. I go in for back surgery tomorrow... I may need to have a friend purchase one for me...

I know that as soon as I threw some dusted crickets in there, Tabius went CRAZY! (that's his name :O) He was so hungry, the poor little guy.

I gave him some carrots... He doesnt seem to like them.

I'll post a new topic with pictures! ^_^

ha ha about spelling it wrong. i think alot of people do it because i was bored one day and searched for "collared lizards" on AOL homepages and got nothing and then i modified the spelling and got several hits. just remember, if something has heat, it is heatED, if something has a collar, it is collarED ha ha!
