crickets hiding...some advice needed

versicolor May 31, 2004 02:17 PM

I usually put a handful of dusted crickets in Meathead's tank every morning, but they hide under or in the wood I have in there for him to bask on, or they will hide under the newspaper. When he is ready to jump down and eat some crickets they have scattered and hid so he only ends up eating a few every day. He won't eat them out of a bowl either so that won't work. Any suggestions about what I might be able to do? I would just replace the wood with some rock but he just got used to the setup I have and I'm afraid if I change anything he will stop eating again. I've also tried feeding him in a seperate container but he won't eat if I move him out of his tank. By the way, he is 7 inches long and I've had him for about two weeks. He is in a 20 long tank with a 50 watt spot light above one end (110-120 degrees) and a 24"ZooMed 5.0 along the length of the tank. I have newspaper for substrate. Thanks for any help.

when dragons are really little it is best to keep them in a very simple setup. So if you can I would go with just a basking rock sifted sand or shelfliner and that is it my friend. Little crickets can hide anywhere. With so many crickets builing up in your cage they could just go to town(eat)on your dragons eyelids and other soft tissue one night. I would definitely suggest going simple and once he/she gets about 10-12 inches you can start to get a little more creative.
Matt at Mystical uses very simple setups with shelfliner laid over flat boards to reduce hidespots and it also make for easy cleaning. You can make it a little more interesting by adding some fake vines like he does. Hope that helped.

Make sure it is large enough for your beardie to fit in comfortably and use this as your only feeding area. We feed ours pellets, greens and crickets here and he knows to eat there. It's funny because he will wait for us to put a cricket back in the bowl if it gets loose. The crickets will usually start eating the pellets and greens and don't feel a need to jump out.
