So sad... the baby in the remaining egg was dead...

Gunilla May 31, 2004 02:37 PM

It is so sad… the baby in the last egg that didn’t hatch was dead. I opened up the egg today since it turned “transparent”. Inside was the baby, curled up with the tail in its mouth. So cute… I was to name this baby Cheri (CheriS has helped me so much and is a wonderful person!) since I have given all my babies temporary names of my “online reptile friends”. :.(

So cute, and so small...

I know it was probably something wrong and that is why it died. But this makes two dead babies out of 8 eggs. Is it that common? Disa has laid 3 clutches and only the first one was fertile. The other 2 was all infertile, could it be something wrong? I know it is impossible to tell the cause of the deaths, but I am just wondering if someone has some experience in this and what’s the most common cause is when they die just before hatching.

It is so sad that two babies were dead since I only kept 8 eggs all together… :.( Well, I guess I shall be happy about the six healthy babies that I HAVE. They are adorable!

So sorry to hear that. My last dragon is finally out of the egg but has been in the incubator for two days. He seems to be doing fine but his yolk sack is not being absorbed into his body very quickly. He's taking a big drink while I type this so I think he is going to be fine. 86 days in the egg. He'll be late for everything the rest of his life.

The reason BDs lay soooo many eggs is part of natures rules. Lots of eggs generaly means not to many make it. As captive animals we change that and give them much better odds. We incubate and nurse and do all the things that they don't get in the wild. Sometimes mother nature just says NO. It takes a lot of effort to get out of the egg and weak ones dont make the cut. There is a whole list of what could have gone wrong. It could be your male, maybe the female, maybe, maybe, maybe.... As long as you did what you could (I am sure you did), then it's up to mother nature.

I am sorry for your loss. It's always sad when babies dont make it but that picture is a heartbreaker.

I had it happen last year with collareds, eggs seemed fine until the end did not hatch, I also opened to find perfectly formed dead babies a few, very very sad!

Thank goodness your others are fine and healthy, you can be happy for them, :0)

Sorry!

Yes, I think you are right Bennett. And in a way I think it is better that they don't hatch than to hatch and be sickly. That is even more sad. After all - the weak ones are not "supposed" to live. Sad, but true. Thanks for your reply.

Oh that photo haunts me. How sad Gunilla. I'm so sorry you lost one and had to see that. At least the other 6 are doing well!

Thanks Veronica,
Yes, it is a very sad photo. I lost two babies of 8. I think that is quite a "lot". I don't know... Disa laid her 4th clutch yesterday and they were all infertile - again. Only the first clutch was fertile and of those babies two died. So maybe it is something with Disa, who knows?
