such as newspaper, paper towel or shelf liner.

once your dragon has matured to adult size then you may switch to sand (ordinary play sand from Home Depot is best) but this will have risks of impaction. If your dragon likes to taste everything or is a messy eater you are best to stick with the non-particulate option.

do not use calci-sand, repti-sand, crushed walnut shells, corn cobs, bark substrate.... as these 'reptile' substrates are overpriced and dangerous to your beardie

if your going for an awesome look in your beardies home, make it look natural with some tile from home depot or lowe's! with my leopard gecko i went and got some cool swirly tile that looks like her natural habitat (dark) and filled the cracks with peat moss and potting soil. the only problem is, if u dont fill all the cracks in really good, crickets dig their way under there and well... die, which stinks, literally. after i try potty training my beardie, which i am only "trying" i will put some tile in there and go get some sand (die it orange-red) or very fine reptile sand that is orange-red to match the sand-colored tile i already have picked out. not to mention tile is cheaper than any two bags of sand your going to buy at your pet store, and you dont have to change it out every week and buy more, just disinfect. i'm trying to make him feel at home in the desert where his ancestors came from, im even going to pick up a few cool colored cactus for him to hang out with. id post a picture but i dont have it set up yet. good luck

Actually the good sand that is most safe to use only costs 2$ the reptile sand made for reptile is the crap you want to avoid. One bag for 2$ can usually fill a 40 breeder sufficiently twice. As long as your beardie is not eating the sand(alot) and is not real young then you will probaly be fine.
