Breeder loans

TraceH May 31, 2004 05:47 PM

I just acquired
1.0 66% het for pie bald 2002
1.0 50% het for caramel albino 2002
Is it unorthodox to use breeder loans when breeding these guys? I deal mostly with spiders and I know in that community people trade males around all the time. Is there any reputable guys that will see if your snake breeds true? Or am I just setting myself up for having two less snakes.

I wouldn't say that breeder loans are common with ball pythons but they are done. I've borrowed females to try to breed to my males before and I currently have 5 of my females out on a loan.

Because some ball pythons are quite valuable (I've heard of big proven normal females going from $250 - $800, and then there are morphs) it gets a little touchy. What if something happens to the snake while on loan? Can you not only trust the other person to take care of the snake but to fairly split the offspring? They might not even breed. What if one of the snakes is sick and it spreads to the other snake?

Since loans aren't done a lot it's also hard to say what the standard terms are. With approximate valued animals there is sometimes an even split with the one hosting the breeding picking first in rotation (so if there is an odd number they get the extra). But what if one animal is much more valuable?

Also, shipping is difficult if you aren't set up as a certified airlines shipper and expensive even if you are.

Perhaps your best bet is to find someone local to you (perhaps through a herp club) that has a big female long term pet and some interest in breeding her.

Best of luck!
