Thawing mice at room temp...

Tigergenesis May 31, 2004 06:09 PM

I've always thawed my snakes food in a ziplock in warm water. I thought I'd try thawing at room temp. I was wondering about how long it takes for say an adult mouse?

Takes around 6 hours at 70 degrees. I loved it because i could take the mouse out of the freezer then let it thaw for a few hours then feed it before i go to sleep.

I was thinking it might be more convenient than waiting around for it to thaw with the warm water method. I was wondering if I might be able to put all the mice I plan to feed that night in a bowl before leaving for work and have it ready for when I get home. I was concerned about that being too much time for some of the smaller hoppers/fuzzies. Is there an odor when you thaw at room temp? My house stays at 72 degrees. Should I cover the bowl of mice with a lid or just leave open?

Thanks

Pinkies (mouse) = about 20 minutes - 40 minutes
Adult mouse = about 1 - 2 hours
Jumbo Rat = ALL DAY!
I thaw a variety of feeders, some for sinaloans, some for yearling balls, some for adult balls, & some for my big boas. The jumbo rats are still frozen in spots, I put them out with the others earlier today...everyone else has been fed except the boas!

Wow, thanks. What do you put them in/on to thaw (bowl, paper towel, etc)?

Big ol' ziplock bag on a newspaper. It doesn't smell...except for the time I forgot one of the mice in the newspaper overnight because one of the balls didn't eat & I forgot to re bag it & toss it. That isn't going to happen again! I get my frozen feeders fro rodentpro, they aren't all soggy & nappy looking. I highly recommend them.
