I’ve kept this species from time to time since I was a kid. They are cantankerous , but I think they are some of the most interesting captives among snakes. They’re very alert and seem to be more intelligent than your average snake. Here’s my latest racer (last one I had was in 1985). It is an 18 inch juvenile that still has some pattern visible under the black coloration. It will bite you repeatedly, but is a great feeder on live mouse fuzzies and rat pinks.

Just saw the pic of the racer today..
Just lovely. Am hoping to find someone who breeds them in my area (illinois) ... I have a yellow bellied racer that I just adore and want to keep more of these interesting snakes.
