cage for jungle carpet

janome May 31, 2004 07:27 PM

I have a 5 foot jungle carpet python in a 40 gallon tank. I want to get her a bigger enclosure but not sure what. How do you heat those vision type cages?? Right now she has a UTH, basking light for day and red light for night.
I'm hoping to get something with a little height so she can climb. Also something very secure (of course). I like the 40 gallon tank she is in now. It has half screen/half glass top. Bought it at Petco. I can also have those pretty pictures for the back.
Any one with ideas or sites please reply. I posted this same issue on the snake forums with no response. Thanks. JP

I have an adult jc (6ft) that fits quite comfortably into a 75 gal tank.and with that size he still has lots of room to move around. There is height and I have huge grape branches in there. I have a huge piece of cork bark to hide in, room for a large water bowl.I see the snake moving freely about the tank often. And lot of times he is hanging upside down attacking his meals ( frozen adult mice ). There is a center brace where you can bolt the branch to.
For heat, I use a zoo med undertank heater (the 60 gal size)
an Exo Terra infrared 75 wt bulb, and a mesh top with it covered with acrylic to the edge of the dome light.
This setup has served me more than well. I have been thinking of converting my larger snakes over to plastic commercial cages, but I hate to give up the 75 gal for the JC.
Mainly due to the fact that nobody makes tall large cages that wont bleed me and my wallet to death.
This whole setup, all bought new, still costs less than a commercial plastic cage.

The most popular way to heat visions (at least those without the light shroud) seems to be with a combination of UTH's and radiant heat panels - either Pro Product's or Helix's.

Here is a cage I originally built for a friend's Jungle Carpet. The JCP started to exhibit IBD symptoms so it never made it into the cage. It now houses a group of Uroplatus henkeli, hence the plants, etc.

I could provide you a cut list for this cage if you like.

I like the glass tanks better becasue they don't seem like a dark dungeon. The 75 gallon tank sounds good since I would be able to put a picture background on it. Is that at least 4 foot by 2 foot? I read that's what a 6-8 food JCP would need. I don't think I want to get into building a cage. For one I don't have the right saws to cut wood.

I think this is a great idea. I really like the false floor.

I don't understand the "false floor".
That enclosure looks incredible, but how does the snake get to the rubbermaid under the cage floor?

Thanks,
Mindy

Look in the front right corner of the cage floor--there is an access hole with a grommet around it. Kinda like the hole in a desk through which computer cables run.

With this setup there's no wasted floor space with a hidebox--it's underneath.
