Anyone use Zoo Meds - Reptivite reptile vitamins for therer monitors?

monitorman315 Jun 01, 2004 08:06 AM

Some of you know that i recently acquired a WC Baby Salvator and have been dusting its pinkies and crics with Rep-Cal with D3 mixed with Reptivite and was wondering since most people i've heard from use Miner-All if maybe there was a problem with using Reptivite with monitors.

I have used Repcal products since 91 and I have set the standard for growth and reproduction in monitors(there are other successful keepers too)

I have tried miner-all several times, without seeing any noticeable difference. The problem I have with miner-all, is getting it in large quanities. In fact, they owe me a couple hundred pounds now. At one time, they sent me big plastic bags of white powder in unmarked bags and box. I thought I was done for. They are also out of what I need on a steady basis.

So what I find wrong with miner-al, has nothing to do with if it works.

I believe, Rep-cal is designed for reptiles, althought it may not be. And Miner-al is borrowed from the bird world. But I imagine that is not important either, as both work just fine. FR

would you suggest i continue supplementing its diet thru out the first year or just until its large enough to eat medium to adult mice as a staple diet? Or does that all depend on its growth rate, bone development etc.? See this is actually the first hatchling ive purchased, in the past i've acquired them(monitors) at 3 to 4 months or older and to be quite honest ive never used any supplementation until now. Thus my ignorance on the subject.

Please understand, I do not suggest anything, sort of. I am only telling you what I do and what has worked for me.

Your problem is, you have to make your own decision. Just make it. Its not going to change the world either way.

Whats so funny to me is, there is no magic bullet that kills your monitors or fixes them either. Normally bad enviornmental conditions causes calcium absorption problems, not lack of calcium or lack of D-3.

All of this complex of problems is slow on onset and easily fixable. In other words, do you see or have a problem, then why on earth are you trying to fix it? As the old saying goes, don't fix what ain't broke.

For me, its turned out over the years, that monitors that eat rodents, from pinkies on up, have no need for any sort of suppliments. Monitors that eat primarily insects, do need both calicum and vitamins as a suppliment. It seems pinkies have a very high calicum content, wonder what that big white ball is in the middle of them?

You have to remember, we allow our monitors to run hard, that is, they breed, multiclutch, grow fast, etc. Still with rodent feeders, there is no need. As an example, my old bag female cross is breeding for her third clutch this year, her 49th clutch in her 9th year of life, and has never had any suppliments of any kind. THERE IS NO NEED. She never had a problem.

Again my concern is and always has been, why is it so common to worry about things that are not a problem, when theres so many problems that do need worrying and fixing. Good Luck FR

Frank,
Do you have any pictures of the baby crosses that you have sold (or are selling)?

Thanks,
Lou
