Does anyone have any red headed agamas??

tegu2002 Jun 01, 2004 12:25 PM

I really want to get a red headed agama and am working on my dad so that I can get one. I think they are soooo cute and cool. Because they only get small, I thought I would get an adult because there is a gravid one at the pet shop. I'm not sure if they are selling her though will have to see.

Would anyone advise me not to get them, I have a spare cage that is the perfect size for a couple of these gorgeous animals.

This is what I have already:

0.1 pyrenean mountain dog
2.2 cats
1.1 black and white tegus
1.1 cornsnakes
1.0.1 bearded dragons
0.0.1 rat snake
0.0.1 san diego gopher
0.1 boa constrictor
1.0 rabbit
1.1 Hogg Island Boas
1.0 Malaysian Blood python
2.2 burmese pythons
0.0.3 royal pythons
1.1 mexican milksnakes
0.0.3 fish
1.1 hamsters
1.0 Herman's Tortoise
0.0.1 green iguana

they certainly are pretty, the males, are the colorful ones.

I almost got some, but did not, (got a pair of black agamas instead) A friend of mine got them though.

He has had a great deal of problems with them. Super flighty and unhandlable. Run when they see him.

They are always wild caught, and come with a heavy parisite load, meaning sometimes mites, and usually worms.

His had round worms and were treated for cocidia. Two died, were very emaciated and would not eat. And one now has an infection of some sort in the limb area, very swollen. Could be MBD.

I am not saying that they are all unhealthy, I'm sure if you work with them, they would be fine.

I know from experience once your set on a species of lizard THATS WHAT YA WANT, hehehhehe, so I wish you luck in your decision.

let us know how yoy make out!

Please thonk twice.
Yes, they are not big and colourful.
But they are extremely agile and skittish.
Despite of their size they need verylarge enclosures of 4 x 2 x 4 ft and up.
Also imports do often have a heavy parasite load.
Sicne they are so cheap, many people tend to ignore these issues and just buy them and try to set them up in a standard 20 or 50 g tank.
That does hardly ever work.
Most imports do seemingly well in the first weks and than rapidly decline and die within their first captive year.
I would restrict those to herpers with lots of space and lots of experience.
Seriously

Yesterday I got three sinia agamas, well that is what they called them at the pet shop. They are soooo adorable. One of them is a bit skittish because I think it is a bit younger but he does not bite. The other two are really lovely and they are really good eaters.

I was just wondering how you tell what sex they are, I think I have 2 boys and 1 girl but I'm not sure.

A red headed Agama would be Agama agama, whereas a sinai agama belongs to the species Pseudotrapelus sinaitus (see pic) -and btw is easier to keep than red headed agamas
