Effects of Panacur?

gothra Jun 01, 2004 06:09 PM

What are the effects after taking Panacur and other deworming medicine? I found that my leos became very tired, sleeping 95% of time; and their faeces had something white in there (they'd only eaten mealworms). I don't see those white blobs moving, but could that be the internal parasites? Is this normal?

What other signs should I look for in order to know that the deworming is working? I will get their fecal done again in a week.

Yes, panacur is a toxin, so it might make your leo's lethargic (sorta like having a medicine head).

The white blobs might be dead worms, but it can also be the panacur colouring the poo white.

Make sure you have fresh water available at all times since if they don't have enough water the panacur can cause kidney and liver damage.

Be really careful with panacur....really really careful. i lost 3 leos by accidental overdoses a few years back. It was so so sad. The stuff is an evil dewormer...and overdoses are EXTREMELY easy to occur. Be sure to have some sort of probotic on hand to replenesh some of the gut flora that was killed with the dose. good luck with everything.

This doesn't sound like Fenbendazole (Panacur). It is probably the safest dewormer we could use, of course depending on what type of parasite you're dealing with. That's not to say it's impossible to overdose a leo with Panacur, it's just unlikely unless someone really didn't know what they were doing and really messed up somehow.

Metronidazole (flagyl)or Ivomec, on the other hand, would probably be really easy to overdose. I believe giving an incorrect dosage of flagyl could cause brain or nervous system problems.

As for gut flora, that's a pretty interesting statement. I'd like to see some sort of clinical information on the common stuff found in leopard gecko stomachs. I've read that some vets won't even treat mild parasite (oxyurid) infections and others try to get rid of them completely.

The vet actually gave them the FENBENDAZOLE and METRONIDAZOLE SUSP (FLAGL) himself; but gave me "UNI SULFAPRIM" to give my leos once a day for a week. All my leos hate the taste of it and they'll shake and wipe their heads against paper towel as soon as they got the taste of it. So, I'm just trying my best to give them the correct dosage as specified by the vet (0.04ml). Will slightly overdosing this medicine be a problem?
