Need some feeding advise please...

Jamie Jun 01, 2004 06:46 PM

I have a pair of year old albino nelsons that I bought about a month ago and I have been having trouble getting them to eat. I have tried feeding them out of there cage in a container, in there cage. I am new to milks and was wondering what techniques will help them feed consistantly? I am use to boas that have a great feeding response. Thanks for the help

I have a tangerine honduran, hatched 7-03 that I have to put in a dark box so he'll eat.(I feed F/T) Have you tried this. I feed him 2 fuzzies at a time and sometimes he'll only eat one. So I just leave him in the box for a hour or so and he finally eats. He doesn't like anyone disturbing him so when I put him in the box I just leave him alone. (Be sure if you use a box he can't escape. The one I use is a little Petco carrier they give you when you buy a little reptile and he can get out at the bottom.)
With my corns they will eat if I just set the f/t food in their cages. But not my honduran. He hides 24/7. I also handle my snakes before I get ready to feed them so they are active and moving about.
I am no expert but this works for me so far. Also I think temps have a great deal to do with the feeding response. Are your temps warm enough...This is my honduran Zorro...

I don't know how to resize my photo so it's smaller. :0)

i'd suggest first that you ask the person you got them from what they were eating. Many snakes are idiosyncratic and/or habituated: they'll eat one logical food but not another, or live but not dead, or vice versa. So knowing what helped them get thru their first year would be useful ifnormation.

Second, if you can get a gram weight on them, it would help us here to judge whether they'vbe been feeding adequately or not before you got them.

Some of my nelsoni wanted to eat only frozen-thawed or fresh killed mouse fuzzies, a little smaller than they were capable of eating. Braining seemed to get a better feeding response, too. You may even need to try lizard scenting. But again, the best bet would first be to ask the seller what he/she was feeding them.

Try puting a pinkie in their hide box and leave them alone over night.
