In response to Jovcham's sad vet visit.

sea_in_the_city Jun 01, 2004 07:09 PM

Jovana I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I have also recently had some issues. I bought 6 chameleons of various locales and sex from a breeder within the past 2 months. Of the 6, 2 have died, and 2 are sick. Luckily 2 are still thriving. The 4 all showed signs of illness within 7-14 days of receipt. I haven't wanted to say anything until now because I didn't want to add to the trash talk that seems to run rampant around here. I had/have taken the sick/deceased chams to 2 different vets in my area, as well as talked to as many breeders (off the record) as possible. I know now that it is nothing I have done. I have spent hundreds of dollars and hours upon hours of time force feeding and medicating these poor animals that came from a "repuatable" breeder, or so I thought. I will NOT add to the gossip columns, but rest assured that I will never buy from them again. They know who they are. Thank you everyone that has helped me along the way, and given me words of encouragement. Jovana, I know how you feel. Good luck with the rest of your colony.

It is very sad to lose an animal like that. I almost cried when the vet sugested putting my beautiful animal to sleep to ease his pain.

I would have still bought him if they told me he was sick but cureable, I would have then known to take him to the vet right away and start treatments, instead of thinking he was checked out because the breeder said the worms were dead and no harm to the animal.

The chameleon community lost one of the most beautiful ambilobe males I've ever seen because of all of this. On a lighter note my vet was so angry at the situation that he offered me a slighly less than perfect ambilobe, he's very cute though, I'll post pics once he's finished shedding. thank you again ivan

Jovana, I am so sorry to hear about your beloved chameleon, and I'm even more sorry that you were terribly mislead by one of these "dealers". I, too, am in Florida and have the priviledge of having Dr. Ivan treat my animals. That was so generous and considerate of him to give you another...please do post pictures when he's finished shedding. I'm impressed. That was super nice of you, Ivan.

Yes Ivan was simply amazing, he was straite forward with me about my poor male, whom Ivan also said was an amazing animal when he was healthy. His services were much cheaper than the other vet I use to use and the old vet had only "had a cham in college" that was his chameleon experience. Anyone in central FL area who can use him as a vet is blessed. I dont just say this because he offered me the other ambilobe, but because of his experience and honesty.

My new male is doing great and eating like a pig, not only did he give him to me but he made sure he was 100% healthy before handing him to me, he pulled out a few sub Q worms. Half of his tail is missing that is why he is named hephestos, but that does not alter his health, color, or breeding so I'm perfectly happy.

Hi Jovana:

I am happy to hear Hephestos is liking his new home. He is definitely less than perfect but when you consider that he was near death and not eating when I got him, then it is amazing that he is doing so great. I am also glad to see that your signature in the forums went back to 1.1 Ambilobes. Thanks for all the nice words about me and the clinic. Some people don't share your feelings but I don't count the negatives as those are always to the left and therefore don't count.

Doug, it was extremely nice meeting you and your chameleons. It is still amazing the size of that female. I can't recall ever seeing such a gigantic animal. I am glad she is doing good for you as it seems she would have been doomed with the previous owner. With any luck we will try to pull Silk through this as well.

Regards,
Ivan

...Luna is a little less than perfect with her small size, short tail and funny mouth - but that's what makes her special. I am sure your new little guy is very special, too
