My dragon took off for seven months during the winter here in central california. about two months ago while i was with my other dragon out in the yard like i always do nearly every day, he suddenly was right there three feet from me. the two were having some sort of staring contest with their tales in the air - i of course thought i was going crazy and had to look twice then another time util i freaked out and kneeled down to say hello. i was afraid he might bolt but he just tilted his head with a big smile and waited for me to scoop him up. he was in perfect condition and had gained wait but the vet recommended some extra calcium. he since then apparently decided two weeks was long enough for a visit because he once again managed to open his cage door - and believe me the security level was high on his cage but he is quite the mastermind. i went to the store and upon returning found his cage door open and the screen door (which does not lock and can be pushed open), cracked open just enough for a dragon to slip through. I was devastated and felt like such a fool because i had posted flyers everywhere and handed out notice to neighbors, and ran an ad in all local publications for at least four of those months he was gone. Seven months and now who knows how long. The first time he took off my boyfriend and i hired search dogs, purchased hunting scopes and binoculars, and cleared half the foliage on the property and never found him, though he was obviously there the entire time. I've realized that it is a matter of him coming out on his own - so we bought a little girl to try to lure him into the open though she just managed an overnight escape of her own. my dragons love to play hide and seek and every time i find them by looking endlessly - one of them even makes rustling noise in response to his name being called which is very helpful, though he always lets me search for an hour or two first. for him, i use a bird call listening device. it's crazy, yes, i know, but the point is keep looking for as long as you can stand it,and then just know in your heart that he/she is going to show up some day - never ever ever lose hope - seven months through rain and some really cold nights (for which i even contemplated buying patio heaters for warming the entire yard), but he showed up just fine! Just be sure that you keep in mind when moving heavy objects or planters or whatever, and if you mow your lawn or rake leaves - do all these things with caution from now on. Leaf piles and hedge are target areas. Also, keep an eye out for animals and birds - if younotice birds swarming or squaking something in your yard go check it out right away - that is how i found one of mine once. try to keep predatory daytime animals from hanging out in your yard too. anyway, enough of my stories but please always keep hoping - your dragon can certainly surprise you some day!
