NC turtle laws

obxgirls Jun 02, 2004 12:03 AM

Hi! Could anyone tell me what the current laws are for owning turtles in North Carolina? I do know that they changed last year, but I cannot seem to find them on the internet.

If allowed by law, I would like to purchase some some of land turtle for myself and my 2 girls. I know that I will be doing most of the work and that only the oldest will be capable of doing any of the handling, but I would appreciate any suggestions for box turtles/tortoises that might work well with pre-teens. She is very responsible and handles the animals that we have now with the utmost care and respect.

1-1-0 guinea pigs (Spike & Miss Piggy)

0-1-0 black lab (Shadow)

Thanks,

I *think* non-natives are not regulated in NC, so a captive bred Russian or Hermans would be a good size. Humidity might be too high, though, for a Russian.

Try the tortoisetrust.org or boxturtlesite.org for your research. Don't forget to consider adoption.

it's illegal to sell turtles in NC, and i think thats true with most states. im pretty sure its illegal to keep wild caught turtles too, but theres no one to enforce that unless a park ranger catches you trying to take off with one from the local park. its perfectly legal to own one if you obtained it legally, i.e. from the SC reptile show, which comes to columbus, sc i think. in SC its legal to sell turtles. im guessing youre from the outer banks from your name - i have often seen baby RES's sold at tourist beach shops in SC, i would not recommend buying one there because of the fact that these people rarely take good care of them, nor do i know if its legal for them to sell them like that. anyway, good luck.

It depends on what you want to keep in NC. If you do indeed live on the OBX don't touch any thing alive!!!! You can keep most pet shop type turtles plus boxies and torts. Again if you live on OBX you might want to stay away from most torts, it's too humid( I live on Top Sail ) A Red foot would be great! Just watch the salt spray, keep it on the inland side of the house.. Rock on, Blue
