Saved a Gopher snake, have a question about shedding/lack thereof

UTGopher Jun 02, 2004 09:51 AM

I caught a little gopher snake crawling across a driveway in a fairly large development about 2 weeks ago, and I have a question. The snake is probably just over a foot long, and about as big around as my pinky (not that that helps you guys much:-D). He's grown quite a bit in the 2 weeks I've had him.

Anyway, I was noticing that his eyes were starting to cloud over and he was starting to look a little "dusty" in spots, like maybe he was going to shed. It was like this for a couple days, then one morning when I checked on him his eyes were clear again. I can't find any skin or anything in his tank. Is this normal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

It may take a few days or so after the eyes clear for the snake to actually shed. I would put the little guy in a plastic container with no more than 1/4" deep of lukewarm water for 15 minutes to let his skin hydrate. Then he should shed fine when it is time.
