Strange Sounds

turtlemoon Jun 02, 2004 10:02 AM

I was suprised to see someone else was having the same problem as me when I checked out the forum this morning. My 2 inch slider was basking on his rock today and making strange sounds. People said it could be pneumonia or a respiratory infection. How do you prevent this kind of stuff? Do I have to go to a vet or could it go away on it's own? I'm going to go watch him now and see if he's still doing it.

I watched my turtle for over 30 min and he didn't cough or sneeze again. He is swimming fine and the water is around 79 degrees.

Most people will tell you that noises are a sign of RI which will not go away on its own and requires a visit to the vet. That said, at least one of my turtles makes an occassional noise (sounds like a cat) and shows no other signs of illness. Read up on RI and make sure you know all of the signs and if your turtle develops any other signs of illness take him to the vet quickly. RI's can kill your turtle quickly if untreated.

Good Luck, Nancy
