What are the rules for housing beardies together?

turtlequest Jun 02, 2004 10:48 AM

If i get two babies, will they get along?

Is there a male/male or a female/female or a male/female problem.

Thanks.

It is usually best to house them separately. Two females may get along, but it depends on the beardies temperment. Males cannot be housed with males, and if housed with females they will harrass and over breed with the females causing her stress.

Never put 2 mature males together. Generally, females will do ok but no guarantees. Males and females will breed so make sure they are old enough and big enough. Make sure that any animals housed together are of compatable size.

Always, always, always quarantine new animals for a minimum of 30 days. (I recommend 90 days)

Babies can be housed together up to around 4-5 months regardless of sex. Older than that and sex is an issue.

Male / Male is a big NO - they will fight for dominance, and injuries, lost toes, feet, tails, bites and eaven death should be expected.

Female / Female is possible if they get along. There must be basking sites for both animals, food must be plentiful, and the tank must be big enought to support multiple dragons. If there is fighting, or if one appears to be dominating the other so feeding and basking is restricted, then they must be separated.

Male / Female is not recommended. If kept together they will breed. Constant breeding is very stressful on the female, and weakens her health. Furthermore they should not breed until adults (18 months and 400g), so although they are sexually mature at 6 months, that is way to early to breed as it will disrupt her growth. Juvi males have also had reports of inability to retract the hemipene successfully after mating. Bottom line M/F should not be attempted unless both dragons are 18 months, and you are ready for LOTS of babies.

Dragons are solitary creatures. They do not need company. They do not get lonely. My advice to you is to separate them at 5 months unless you are 100% sure they are both female. You dont want to have to deal with fighting injuries or gravid juvenilles. Separation is best for everyone.

enclosure? Would a 4'6 X 2 be big enough for both of them? Sorry I hope I didnt butt into this thread. I have two females who so far get along great. But they are young only about 4mnths old. so I can always make a double decker enclosure because building up is no problem, Im just not sure how I would affix the lights.Thanx Cee

I agree with Ross, the best way to go is to raise them seperately until you know the sexes. and reintroduce them when they are older and the same or very close in size. Never put two males together (it just isnt worth it to try). Females can be raised together but keep an eye on them, I currently keep 2 of my females together in a 6ft. cage and every now and then one gets made at the other, never anything serious, just some head bobs, but you never know what could happen, (this also only happens during the breeding season, they have been roommates for 4yrs now). and dont keep males in with females, males left in with females leads to overbreeding and a tremendous amount of stress placed on the female.
