Go to the Ratsnake Forum for specific help for these. I can tell you that they can get large - like 8ft - but have much less girth than any boa or python. They are active and eat alot and need ample cage space. In my opinion, even a bullsnake with an attitude is easier handled than a beauty snake, but that is my bias.

If you want a sizable colubrid that will intrigue you yet have very simple maintenance requirements, I suggest a CB bullsnake or gophersnake (of the gophers, my favorites are Sonorans and San Diegos). Compared to boas & pythons, pituophis are certainly easier to house and heat, and they have interesting personalities that are at worst still manageable, and at best super tame. They can also be addicting as all heck, so you must have some self-control if you don't want to end up with more than you intended.

I've heard that some beauty snakes can make nice pets. Like all species, individual personalities vary. Still, I've always observed the generalization that thinner species tend to be more active and, often, nastier (for example, racers and coachwhips). As my local reptile shop keeper said to me when I asked him about the diference between beauty snakes and pits, "Some of the pines and bulls can become as tame as puppies, but I've never met a beauty snake that hasn't tried to take a poke at me."
