Glauerti keepers...

JimM Jun 02, 2004 01:39 PM

Hello all,
I sold off my large monitors some time back, just time to move on.
I'm considering obtaining a pair of glauerti however. What you, in your judgement consider the minimum enclosure size for a pair? I have a few enclosures sitting around, and I want to make a naturalistic desert vivarium - something I just didn't have the space for with 6' lizards.
Funny, but in all my years doing this I have no experience with small varanids!

Any help appreciated
Cheers
Jim

Sorry, but Kimberlys are not from the desert. Maybe you were thinking, Pilbara Rock monitors, they are from the desert. Good Luck FR

My use of that term was confusing - my bad.

Hey Jim,

Haven't seen you around for a while. I was going to email you soon, to find out how you are doing. No more albigs, I take it?

Hi David!
I wrote you a little blurb over on the NL forum to drop me a line.
I had to sell the albigs, just too much right now, what with all the other stuff going on in my life, not to mention the reef tank, other hobbies, etc. I need something smaller. So I have this 92 gallon corner tank sitting empty, I'm thinking collared lizards or glauertis. I'm leaning towards the collareds, considering the space.
Drop me an email - jim.mcdavid@target.com. I don't get a chance to check my hotmail account much.

cheers
Jim

Hi there Jim,

I don't know what a "minimum" enclosure size would be, but I do know that they are a very active species, so I offer them as much room as I can accomodate. My Kimberlies are set up in a 6' x 2'x2' melamine trough, with a plexiglass top, with a few holes drilled in the plexiglass for oxygen exchange. 6' may seem big for such a small lizard, but let me tell you, they use every inch of the enclosure, and if I had the space, I would give them bigger... They deserve the best...haha.

Glauerti truly are a wonderful species to keep, their sheer beauty, gracefulness and temperment make them one of my favorite monitors that I keep. Hatching the eggs can be a b**ch though...haha(see earlier post).

I have found that females, since they are not as massive as males, can dehyrdate quickly, so I make sure that I mist them daily/bidaily- my female will drink right from the spray nozzel of the garden mister, however she won't drink from a bowl of standing water... But then again, I guess that hydration is an important aspect of all monitor/reptile/animal/ living organisms...

I have pics and more info describing how I keep my glauerti on my website if you are interested...other than that, I hope this helps a bit, hopefully some of the other glauerti keepers will post their experiences with them as well...

Take care Jim, have a great day.
