Making your own thermostat controls...

Has anyone done this? I'd like to make my own instead of having to buy the expensive ones but I'm not sure what parts are needed.

My friend does this for a thermostat we sell but it takes knowledge of a PIC programming language and good electronics experience. If you want to make a rheostat you can do that pretty easy with a standard dimmer switch and an outlet.
