Calcium w/ or without D3

JuneBug Jun 18, 2003 01:37 PM

Hello,

I have two malis and I was wondering if I provide them with full spectrum lighting do I have to use a calcium supplement with or without synthetic D3. Common sense would allow me to believe that just calcium without synthetic D3 would be all they need, but I have read different in some care sheets.
Thanks to anyone who helps.

we use the full spectrum lights and all that but we still add supplements, with d3, just not every day.

I've been quite cautious about giving my uro extra vitamin D, cause I've heard that they can get diarrhoea from getting too much, and that if proper UV lighting is provided, they'll be able to get enough calcium anyway.

There is no bulb on the market which alows to omit dietary D3.
Just calculate doses a bit and only give about 50 IUper week and kg animal.

I can tell you from experience that bearded dragons can be raised without any UV lighting on a supp WITH d3 added. They cannot however, be raised with UV lighting and a supp. that does not contain d3. I personally believe that dietary d3 is much more important than d3 that may be obtained by artificial UV lighting when trying to prevent nutritional disorders such as MBD.

I agree with Bill.

I use an Arcadia Reptile D3 lamp (uvb), but also the uro´s get MinerAll indoor on every second feeding.
