IBD in green anacondas

eunectes4 Jun 02, 2004 02:53 PM

what have we found as far as cases of IBD in green anacondas. I know DFR mentions star gazining yellows and that is a IBD sign. green behavior (well yellows too I guess) is often different from other snakes so what signs would you look for? I worry about not catching disease symptoms anacondas since they will go to cooler areas even if offered warmer ones...if you give them water...they will usually go in it even if very cool. Will this lead them prone to URI's? I don't know of many anaconda cases with URI's (saw that as a bivittalus thing) but if would make sense if they got one.

I am not aware of any past cases of IBD in Eunectes overall, but that may be just an artifact of their low numbers in captivity compared to other boid species. As far as cooling and RI, anacondas seem to be much more tolerant of cooler temperatures than other boids, up to a point obviously. This would be expected, as water will conduct the heat from an object many times faster than air. They would need this ability in order to survive when spending large amounts of time in a water environment. I have been around a fair number of anacondas in captivity, and do not remember ever seeing one showing symptoms of an RI. Just my take on it.

That was my take on it too, and I also figured it would be hard to tell with IBD with the low numbers. I also asked this question among the tree boa forum and they did not really seem to come up with anything, I figure there are a few cases, possibly the same in percentage as boas...but I have no clue or any clue how many amazons are kept in comparison to anything else...I know much much less than any bcc or bci. I worry a little with my new setup and the snakes being closed off together if any diesease can spread eithout me noticing. It is lucky for me that most my species are pretty much on the lower end of carrying the common diseases. I know I have a garter with bumps on it that was originally purchased for anaconda food and I held out because of these bumps. Good thing since i got her eating real food now...plus my girlfriend likes to watch garters eat. I have had it for a while and the bumps have not seemed to affect it and nobody can really explain what they are...they just come and go. Thanks for the response on that and thats just my take on it too.
