Ground Snake and Patch Nosed Snake

MyHouseIsAZoo Jun 02, 2004 05:15 PM

Within the last week my guineas have brought me one of each of these species. The also caught a rattlesnake, but they killed it before I found them. Anyway, I have a few questions. The Patch Nosed won't eat. I've tried crickets and mealworms so far, and I'd like some advice on what it will eat before I go buying things. If it absolutly must eat mice, I'll have to let it go, I really don't like doing that. My second question is what can I keep the ground snake in? It's escaped from two different aquariums, though I've tried several things to keep it in. Right now I've got him in a trash can, which is too tall for him to climb.

Patchnose love smaller reptiles. Any smaller snake or lizard is game. Mine would take mice too after a little work. As for the groundsnake, I just use rubbermaids for most of my smaller species with small holes drilled in. Works fairly well. as the lids lock into place.

I have had a WC (wild caught)Patch-Nosed for the past 3 years. He has consitantly eaten frozen-thawed mice from the first week in captivity. He needs to be left alone or he will not eat. He is very nippy and often strikes at the side of his cage when I walk by. After three years he has not tamed down. He is a good eater and has become quite thick for his species.
