Does anyone know what experiment you can use to tell if an object is alive( a living organism )?Like what scientists would perform in order to seperate a block of wood from a sponge?
thanks

well i'm a forensic scientist so really we specialise in things that are dead!! anyways, i've always looked at it as two basic requirements.
1. the ability to reproduce (as a species)
2. the biological process of metabolism / photosynthesis of fuel-energy conversion (as an individual)
so something must be able to reproduce with its own kind and it must convert fuel to energy in a biological process.

2.1 Roommates (require more cleaning up after than the dragon)
I am talking about figuring out if green goo is alive or not through experiments. How do you test for the chemicals of life?Carbohydrates, lipids ,proteins etc.The other characteristics of life I pretty much know how to figure out.
