Anyone ever try this stuff? Probably not since we all like snakes but I was reading about it and something struck me as quite odd. I was under the impression that there wasnt any "snake repellent". Anyway, this site says that it has been tested by the University of Florida and was used in Iraq. They claim it has about an 85% rate of effectiveness. It supposedly temporarily screws up the nervous system when it goes through the jacobsons organ. OK, now to the strange part. The stats of effectiveness look something like this; coral snake, 91%. copperhead, 91%, rattlesnake, 91%, black racer, 75%, and some others similiar to this, then corn snake, 17%. The cottonmouth is at 21%. Whats the deal here. Im skeptical about this product anyway but lets say it does work. Why would cornsnakes and cottonmouths not really be affected by this? If anyone has any info please let me know. Curious and Bored in NC.

Cop story. I responded to an animal case at an old house. This lady was freakin' out over a 12 inch garter snake. (never caught it, got into the AC ducts) anyway, she had some of that stuff. smells like mothballs. Obviously the stuff works amazing if it kept all the snakes out. (sarcasm) Personally, I think it just makes the house smell bad, but let me tell ya, when she saw that snake in her living room, she ran around with that stuff, which looks like rock salt, and poured it everywhere. Funny.

I doubt the validity of it, but that's just me.

Snake Away is nothing more then crushed Moth Balls. The effectiveness is dependant on the snake’s motivation to cross the barrier. Oddly enough the corn snake (wild caught ones) should the most willingness to cross over the barrier. In 100% of the initial trials the corn snake was willing to cross the barrier, without hesitation, when drawn over by food (a live mouse) The Black Racer was not always as willing just for food, but would actually cross over more frequently without reason then the corn snake would. Many of these numbers can be attributed to the snakes own natural behaviors and activity levels.
Will the product work on preventing a snake from simply randomly crossing the barrier in the course of wandering, absolutely. In all case the snakes seemed to, at the very least, react to the chemical and many time it seemed that they were actively looking for away around it, when not provoked by food. Will it stop a snake from crossing while looking for or on the trail of food, nope it won’t.
Is it stupid and purposely aimed at a group of people who suffer from an irrational fear of snakes, absolutely! It gives more of a “piece of mind” protection to the people then it ever offers true repellency.
Neat that you guys brought it up, it has been out there for nearly 10 years now LOL

LOL. I used to do some snake calls and I went to a ladies house that was at the end of a dirt road, backed up to woods with a creek not too far in the distance. As soon as I pulled up I could smell the mothballs. She had tossed them everywhere. She had huge trees in her front yard that had years of leaf litter piled up around them. There were also wood piles and just old stuff all over the yard. And she wondered why she had snakes?
