Big Western Hognose

CaseyLazik Jun 03, 2004 12:01 AM

This is the same female from a few threads below.
She's 34 inches long, 782 grams (nearly 1 3/4 pounds), and is quite opaque.

That is one big Hog. I wanted to see how my biggest Females compared in size. Well they didn't as you can see.

That is a beautiful snake!!
How in the world did you get her soooo big. I have had 2 of mine now for 1 1/2 years and they have grown, but I don't think they have grown enough.
The pic is of my newest baby girl.

That's my 12 year old son and he's not small. You can use the door for comparison also. Of course, it may be a doll house door!
I'll post some more photos after she sheds!

If my female gets that big, I'm going to have to buy a new house! And please don't let my wife see that picture. I've got her convinced that hognoses stay nice and small. She already won't go near the bullsnakes...

I've seen big females before, but nothing like that
That is probably the most amazing pic ever posted in this forum
Can't wait to see more pics

I acquired her two years ago. She has grown substantially since then. I think she was probably 4-5 years old when I got her.
I hope she has many years ahead of her!

Casey, very impressive looking Hognose. I personally have seen only one other that large several years back. One a dealer had available in NE Florida. She was a recent WC individual from an unknown to us at least, area that came in from someone out west.

I have about a dozen hognose here (7 being female) that feed on rat pups weekly that are not even close to that size. Some at 5-6 years old. Curious to any locale info. you may have on her? I do hear from others there is a large form of western originating on the northern part of their range.

Now that I have seen this pic I plan on making another post right after this one in a new thread on pics for large westerns. This pic of your's has raised my interest level up again concerning this topic.

Best Regards, Rich Hebron

That is impressive, Casey. How many eggs does she drop. It looks like that snake has the genes to be a new record. All she needs is another inch and some change. I recently acquired a thornscrub kennerlyi that is 31". I'm letting her acclimate right now, but in a week or so I'll start working on feeding her. Hopefully I don't encounter too many problems. I'm happy to be starting another hog project. I wonder what size some "off the record" nasicus have reached. When the inevitable happens, do you plan on depositing her in a museum collection? Best, Shane

Casey, is that monster to the poss het I bought from you last year?? She looks great. Had a large female several years ago, but not THAT big. By the way, the foour I got from you are doing great. I'm feeding them at this moment. Thanks. I hope I get some pastels out of them in a few years. Greg Jackson

CaseyLazik Jun 06, 2004 02:49 PM

Yes, that monster is the mother of your babies! She was bred to a double het male last year. Of course, she was only about 400 grams then. Glad your critters are doing well.

CaseyLazik Jun 06, 2004 02:54 PM

Yes, I heard about your big Mexican. Would love to see some photos! Last year my big female laid a clutch of 20 eggs and another clutch of 17. I hatched 35 babies from her. The funny thing is, despite her massive size and weight, she does not appear to be gravid now.
I have another female lay 29 eggs this year. She is only in the mid 500's in gram weight. Of these eggs, only 9 were fertile, however.

Makes my little 18inch Dakota look pathetic. I guess if one of those decided to "chew" on you a lot of mild venom could be injected. Wow, oh wow! She is gorgeous.
