Vision Cage - heating

Misfit75 Jun 03, 2004 09:02 AM

Hello! Looking for some advice. I plan on getting a Uromastyx, and wanted to keep it in a vision enclosure. I see there are some models that have a built in section for a dome heat lamp. Is there anyway to use a heat lamp in a model that doesn't have the section for it? Maybe somehow mount the lamp inside the enclosure with mesh guard around it? Can this be done safely? Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Vision cages can be difficult to heat if your room temp is below 80. I would advise against a lamp inside the cage, it could get too hot and melt the bottom under the light, I have seen this happen. Even the ones with the built in spot for the lamp they only recomend up to 60 watts. You would be better off mounting a rhp to the back wall. I sold the one I had, just to hard to maintain proper temp. I had a boa, with you desert lizard you are going to need a higher temp. than with my boa. For the temp that you need I would build a melamine cage and mount a fixture to the ceiling for an infrared heat emitter, they really heat up a cage, the melamine will hold heat and won't cause problems like the vision.
