Taming the dragon! help!

dmlove Jun 03, 2004 10:34 AM

Hey...heres an update on the babies! we have successfully sold most of the first clutch and the whole second clutch! The first clutch we are letting them grow, and im going to keep the first one that came out of the egg, he looks just like my beloved ralph! The third clutch has hatched, from our huge Anna Nicole, and the babies were 4 inches out of the egg! They are absolutly enormous!

Well ANYWAYS! For my question.. My male that i got a while ago still hasnt tamed down. He is a subadult, about 8-9 months. He doesnt "attack" you anymore, but he definetly runs away when i open the cage, and when i pick him up he squirms and opens his mouth. I dont grab him, i scoop him up from the side, but he still flares, etc. Ive been trying to feed him his fav foods, but he just ignores them from my hand and wont eat out of the cage. When i do get him out, he is paralyzed with fear in my hands, and then suddenly will make a break for it. I understand his fear of me, im a huge creature reaching in to grab him, and he must run for his life! I have continued handling him for a few months now daily, but he still has not clamed down one bit. I am definetly going to continue trying, but anyone have any suggestions meanwhile? Thanks so much! Heres a picture of the guy (the first day i got him)...hes a Jemfire Red X Chris Allen red from Foxfire dragons.

Thanks again - David

I figure it like this:

we are going against how many millions of generations of the instinkt to hide from a big thing that may eat you?

I am amazed that they for the most part can adapt to our handling and interaction.

so if a few are more "stubborn" perhaps we should just give room and respect.... after all how wuld you like it if someone told you it was ok to sit next to a huge spinning blade that might kill you... bet most of us would not....

but thats almost what we want the bd to do.... ignore it's natural fear of a large animal that could at any time turn on the bd and kill it.

just a way to look at the issue....

maybe this will help. make the bd think he/she is bigger than you. hold it above you, not dangling in the air. support all feet and if needed, the tail too. lay down and just let him sit there. talk to him if you need to, get it use to your voice, and gradually things might come. also, after i play with my animals, i reward them, in the case of my beardie, i give him a huge juicy cricket. now he always wants to come out and play! good luck

Taming the Dragon...
Waxing the Ham...
Strokin' the Gopher...
Oh yes I am!!!

Tribute to any people in Wisconsin and Illinois who love Pat McCurdy....

As for your problem... It will pass... "dragon proof" a room where you can comfortably sit with him by closing all doors, boxes, and removing any shoes or boots he may want to fly into. Sit with him in your hand and let him sit on your chest for about an hour for every two hours you hold him... Let him explore, but keep him within your reach, and move slowly to pick him up. He should get more used to you as time goes on, and as he moves out of his adolescent stage of being a badass...
