Efficacy of Mexican anti-venin in crotalid bites in San Diego

donalds4 Jun 03, 2004 10:39 AM

I was speaking a veterinarian who owns a prominent emergency clinic in San Diego that treats upwards of 50 C.ruber and C.v.helleri bites each spring and summer and he wanted to know if the Mexican anti-venin would be as effective as it's American Fort Dodge counter part. Fort dodge has limited efficacy on helleri anyway. Some of the doctors are refusing to use the Mexican stuff. Any thoughts? Thanks, don

Emerging evidence is that the Mexican antivenom is quite effective against N. American bites but at a fraction of the cost of CroFab. Perez in Texas has been doing some fantastic work in this area.

Cheers
