Columbian Red Tail boa

logo33 Jun 03, 2004 11:54 AM

I just got a red tail yesterday, it is about seven feet, three inches long, and weighs about 12 or 13 pounds. I just wanted to know if it should weigh, and if i should feed it rabbits, or large rats.

Thanks
Logan Thompson

sounds like it could weigh a bit more...
you could try small rabbits but for now collosal/Jumbo Rats should be fine, especially if male.

That is where my wife draws the line, we have had this battle for 15 years now LOL, she just can’t get over the cute “peter cotton tail” thing. Besides, two Colossal Rats are less expensive then one small rabbit. It sounds as if your snake could be heavier but if he/she looks in general good health and seems to have good body tone, then it is not much to worry about. It may even be a female (at that size) that recently gave birth and is just starting to put back on weight.
Good luck with your new boa

..died after living 40 years! It was around 6 feet long, and I don't think it was a Hog Island Boa, either. I would feed your Boa a rat about the same size in girth than the fattest part on your snake every two weeks. IMHO. Nice looking snake by the way!Ditto on the bigger cage post.

I confused your question with a later Boa pic on this forum. I'm going to bed early tonight!
