Sansevieria trifasciata(snake plant or Mother in laws)---Is it safe for ciliatus? WHAT IS???

brakordestructor Jun 03, 2004 12:10 PM

I've been serching the web and have found contradicting information on the saftey of this plant when it comes to crested geckos, or any reptile species for that matter.
Some sights claim that they or non-toxic, others say that it may cause problems in dogs if injested. One sight said that the sap is toxic.

I want to plant it in a natural vivarium set up, what are your thoughts?

Does anyone have a suggestion on a web site that gives accurate info. on this subject?

thanks,

This is what I found...

As far as good plants to use, have you looked into Pothos or Ficus at all? Ficus benjamina is often recommended for cresteds but even it has a listing under the same website (http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Ficusbe.htm).

I don't really see your crested geckos ingesting these plants, so I don't think you'd run across any problems if you used them.

thanks,

I already have pothos in the vivarium, but wanted a plant that had vertical climbing space.

Ficus just seems too big.

All my cresteds, actually all my arboreal species have sanseveria plants in the cage. Never a problem.

There is a dwarf variety, SANSEVIERIA TRIFASCIATA HAHNII, that is pergect for 10 gal tanks. It stays low and will not out grow the enclosure.
