Greenfrog or Bullfrog ID?

Amanda E Jun 03, 2004 01:30 PM

I originally thought this to be a bullfrog, but since it has begun to metamorph, a dorsolateral fold (or at least a line) is developing, leading me to believe it's a greenfrog instead. Can anyone positively ID this froglet for me?

Full-body:

Close-up (you can kind of see the line in this photo):

Hmm..i've raised tadpoles of both types of frogs before. And I do see the line, but cannot be sure.

But it shouldn't matter anyhow..at this stage, the tail will shrink rapidly and you can post more pics up in a few days or so.

Aside from the dorsolateral fold, the green frogs usually have large blotches on the tail fin. Bullfrogs have black dots that are so fine that it would take an ink tipped needle to recreate it.

Oh yea.shoulda known that...just saw some bullfrog tadpoles for sale at a petstore today, and yea they got really defined dots.

Haven't seen greenfrog tadpoles in a while at this pond near where I grew up. Bullfrogs took over, heh, go fig.
