Behavior...

Lately my res has been acting wierd too! Shes still eating and everything but hasnt basked for atleast 3 1/2 weeks and naps periodically thru out the day at the bottom of her tank. I have also cought her mounting a cement tube i have in the tank for my pleco and she has been digging under it for the past day and a half. Ive been assumeing it has to do with the mateing season or something but i really dont know. Her water temp is around 75 F, basking temp is in the 80's. She has everything she needs and there has not been any changes to her environment. Other than her not wanting to bask and takeing naps thru out the day, her behavior and personality has been the same as it has been since i found her as a hatchling and she seems healthy as can be. Any help would be appreciated! Thanx!

How big is she? Depending on her size she could be gravid.
RES can lay eggs without breeding.

If she is 5-7" long, I would have her checked by a vet
and make sure you provide an area with dirt or sand for
her somewhere adjacent to her water area.

She's about five and half inches. I was kinda thinking that she might be gravid. Soon I will be building a large pond setup with land for her to go on but for right now she's in a 30 gal tank, how should i go about providing her an area of land since she's in a tank? Should I bring her outside for her to dig around or should i put her in a rubbermaid container with a substrate?

I would say rubbermaid with a substrate. That way she can't get away from you or encounter any parasites, etc. I live in an apartment and I know that the groundskeepers treat the lawn with pesticides and weed killers, so I have never let mine run in the lawn. My eldest, who is old enough and large enough to lay, goes into a large tub with substrate around once a week. She digs and roots around for a while, and once did lay a few slugs. (unfertilized eggs) When she's been in a while and looks like she's done, I give her a rinse and back in the tank she goes.
